Lending Libraries

 
The Family & Learning Center has two types of lending libraries available for our students and parents, as well as local teachers and professionals. Materials can be borrowed free of charge at The Family & Learning Center. Visit our office to see our selection!

Resource Library – this library includes recently published books and videos on learning disabilities, social skills, emotional development, parenting issues, and more.
 
Audio-Book Library - this library includes audio books of literature for students and families to use for book reports, required school reading, or pleasure reading.

Audio books can be an experience that all family members can enjoy together. Listening to stories provides the opportunity for parents and children to enjoy good literature together, although reading levels may differ. It allows for discussion of story lines, themes, and vocabulary. They can be enjoyed while driving around town, on long road trips, and when spending quality time at home together.

Audio books are an excellent resource for students with weaknesses in language processing, who have difficulty with decoding words, reading fluently, and/or comprehending what they read. For students with these challenges, listening to the text, rather than decoding it themselves, helps to reduce fatigue, enables slow readers to move through the material more quickly, and allows the student access to content that may be above his/her reading level, but that is at his/her understanding level.

Additionally, listening to audio books can help to improve the student’s vocabulary by exposing the student to words that he/she would not encounter at his/her independent reading level. Audio books also model fluent reading, leading to improvement in this area. Finally, the use of audio books can improve study skills by allowing the student to use energy comprehending rather than decoding.
